WOW LOOK AT OUR NEW HUGE CAGE

The budgies' new cage arrived 04-2006. It is an amazing cage for these little brats! The overall inside dimensions are: 31.5 x 21 x 35.5

In September of 2004 I got my first budgerigar, Grendel, and I have been hooked ever since! Budgies (or sometimes called parakeets) are social, lovable little birds that provide lots of love and fun! I am currently owned by four budgies; Kinsey, Meadow, Beau and Kudzu. (And I swore I would be a ONE bird person!) If you are looking for a pet bird and you are not sure what type of bird I highly recommend getting a budgie!!!

I am saddened to report that our dear Kinsey passed away 05-04-2006. We rushed her to the vet 05-04 and the vet made several attempts to save her, however, it was just Kinsey's time to go. We love her so much and miss her. I will build a memorial site for her in time. Right now it is just too painful to even think about building such a site. It hurts to even look at her photos.

**Sadly Grendel passed away 12-7-2005. She developed a tumor very rapidly and it could not be treated.

Kudzu recovering well from an illness..Kudzu became "stresed" after coming home with us. I think he was even a little ill in the pet store. As you can see in this photo he is bulking up nicely! Kudzu is LIVING proof of how important it is to seek vet care for your little bird at the first signs of illness.

There are a ton of great resources on the web if you want to educate yourself about budgerigars. Before I got Grendel I did some thorough research on the web to find out what I needed to know. As a first time bird owner I felt a little overwhelmed but with the help of some great books and websites I am a seasoned keet mom now.

A few good points:

1. Dont buy a cage that is too small! Buy as big of a cage as you can afford. One of my books, "The Budgie" by Julie Rach says to test your cage for 60. Meaning the height, width and depth should measure at LEAST 60 inches. The spacing between bars should be no more than 1/2 inch. Any wider and your bird may get his head caught between the bars! Educate yourself about what toys are safe. Change your toys out every few weeks so your budgies dont get bored.

2. Be Patient! Birds are not like dogs, they dont necessarily warm up to people right away. Take your hand training slow and dont give up! If you find yourself getting frustrated with your bird put him away and try again tomorrow.

3. Seeds are not enough! My birds get a mix of seeds, pellets, fresh fruits and veggies and sprouted seeds. Grendel's favorite veggie was fresh spinach leaves. ****My birds LOVE Roudybush crumbles! This a high quality pellet brand. They also enjoy Zupreem Wild N Spicy and Harrisons. One trick I learned to get my budgies to eat the pellets is to put them in a plastic zip lock bag and bang them with a hammer to make them smaller.

My vet also recommends that you rotate out the brands of pellets so you bird doesnt get sick of the same thing. I mix two types of pellets at once and rotate between: Roudybush, Harrisons and Zupreem. We are switching from Zupreem Wild N Spicy to Zupreem Garden Goodness because the Wild N Spicy variety has dyes.
